For most North and South Carolina areas, we are looking at Bahia, Bermuda, Centipede, St. Augustine, and Zoysia.
Bahia is a hardy grass suited for the heat and humidity of the South and can handle a lot of foot traffic.
Bermuda This grass is very aggressive grower which helps in preventing weeds. This also can become a problem as it will grow right into your flower bed as well. They are also able to handle a lot of foot traffic and it is drought resistant as well.
Bluegrass is grass used primarily in the cooler climate up north. It is seen around the Carolinas on occasion and the color and texture are notable under the right growing conditions.
Centipede This is a low growing, low maintenance grass. It grows better in the acidic soil in the deep south and has a rougher texture than most grass. With proper care, it has great weed and pest resistance.
Fescue There is a variety of fescue and they all do well in the winter. They each respond differently to heat, shade, wear, drought and if you want to try this kind of grass then you should talk to a lawn care professional.
Perennial Ryegrass This grass germinates quickly and holds up to foot traffic. It is commonly used for use in “wintergreen” option in the warm season lawns.
