I have picked five plants for the southeastern part of the country that I think have good curbside appeal and are drought tolerant. They can be planted in rocky, sandy soil and should still grow with a little love.
1. Hydrangea: This is a versatile plant. I am more familiar with the bush but, some of the other varieties grow as climbing plants and as trees. They grow all through both Americas and Asia, Japan, Indonesia and more. I confess that I was totally ignorant of such a wide variety and got this info from: https://plantaddicts.com/all-about-hydrangeas/
2. Encore Azalea: This seems to be a plant favored by just about every home or business. Go here to see the wide variety you can get.

3. Rhododendron: They come in the same variety as the Azaleas and just as many colors. Good to grow in most soils and climates.

4. Catmint: I like catmint, a cousin of catnip, and has a lovely lavender/blue color to it in the spring and summer. It also can grow in rocky, sandy soil, I know, I did it. Try growing these around the base of your roses.

5. Knockout Rose: And finally the plant for a gardener that kills all plants will love. The knockout rose can be planted in sandy soil and can survive the week you are gone on vacation or business. http://knockoutroses.net/
